How much more traffic should you expect as you rise up Google’s SERPs, Neil M Hancock, Search Marketing Manager at Silverbean explains with the help of a leaked AOL document.
Can you accurately track an increase in traffic with ranking increases?
Yes...and no, as you will see below through the leaked AOL search data, it is possible to accurately analyse the extra traffic revenue from moving up several ranking positions on Google. However there are also some factors which need to be discussed first.
The users search indication
There are two main types of users search queries; research based and transactional based.
- Researched based searchers are more likely to click throughout the search results at a more evenly distributed method, visiting most of the sites from 1 downwards until the find what they are looking for.
- Transactional based searchers are more likely to click irrationally on search results depending on the relevancy of the results, a direct match in position 3 may get more visits than an off-topic result in position 1.
Universal Search
Further to understanding the users search criteria, they could be distracted by the universal search results including but not restricted to;
- Sponsored Listings
- Google Maps
- Google Shopping Results
- Google Image Results
- Google Video Results
- Other Suggested Search Terms
Not only are there potentially lots of distracting universal and vertical search results but they are inconsistent across search terms and regularly appear in different positions in the SERPs

Now we have discussed that the below graph should be taken as a good guide and not gospel, I think it’s about time show you the leaked search data graph...
