They say an image can speak a thousand words! However, unfortunately a search engines can not understand a single one of those words! Neil M Hancock, Search Marketing Manager at Silverbean explains how you can optimise your images to help you rank higher in the search engines.
The search engines need help understanding what and image is meant to portray, which is why putting textual content within an image is such a fundamental sin!
How can we optimise the images?
We can help the search engines to understand the content of an image by a couple of methods.
- The first method is to always use the ‘alt’ attribute when adding an image to your site. You should put a short description of the content of the image in the image alt tag.
- The second method for helping the search engines is to name the file correctly! If the image is an image of a bottle of Moet, call the image ‘bottle-of-moet.jpg’ rather than ‘DSC00215.jpg’
