A digital single market "is a top priority"
Friday 23 October 2009
The implementation of a digital single market for those in the online retail industry has been highlighted as essential by the European Union (EU) commissioner for information society and media.
Responding to a new study by the EU, which revealed that cross-border internet shopping is a growing problem - with 60 per cent of such orders being refused - Meglena Kuneva noted that until a digital single market is launched, there will not be "a real digital economy".
The research from the EU indicated that in all but two countries, the chance of success in cross-border purchases is less than 50 per cent, due in part to traders not shipping products to certain countries or not providing adequate payment methods.
Ms Kuneva said: "Achieving a digital single market is a top priority for Europe."
Earlier this month, it emerged that internet brands could soon have to implement stronger measures to validate the age of customers prior to transaction completion, if the online purchasing of goods and services (age verification) bill is passed into law.
