Above the fold is important for online retailers, expert says

Friday 30 October 2009

The area above the fold on an eCommerce website has been highlighted as important for those in online retail, one industry expert has claimed.

Writing on the Econsultancy blog, Graham Charlton observed that, although such folds do not have to be a barrier as people are willing to scroll down, it should be focused on as it is the first thing visitors will see.

"Web users will often make a decision on whether to continue based on what they see above the fold," he said, adding that because of this it is essential that the content in this area reflects the ethos of the site.

Mr Charlton recommended that brands concentrate on placing navigational links, site search, delivery offers and checkout links - among other features - above the fold.

Earlier this month, companies were advised by Mike Shaw of comScore to consider discontinuing use of the click-through metric to measure online display ad performance, as it may not add value to those trying to drive internet ad revenue.
