Online Christmas shopping explosion expected by eBay

Wednesday 28 October 2009

The UK online retail industry is expected to have a healthy Christmas, following a survey of more than 5,000 European internet shoppers by eBay Advertising.

Findings from the study revealed 85 per cent of respondents plan to either increase or maintain their levels of spending over the yuletide season, while 37 per cent intend to carry out more transactions on the web compared to 2008, UTalkMarketing reports.

Of the shopping categories, entertainment, consumer electronics and clothing, shoes and accessories were found to be the most popular for users.

And Phillip Rinn, director of advertising partnerships with eBay, stated that it is important for those in the retail industry to understand "how to engage with the online consumer".

However, in a post on the Econsultancy blog, Graham Charlton recently warned internet-based businesses to prepare for the run up to Christmas in the face of the ongoing postal strikes, noting that the walkouts could cost the sector approximately £220 million in lost sales.
