Rural communities reliant on online retail, report shows

Thursday 29 October 2009

An increased number of people in rural areas are turning to the internet for their shopping needs as a result of where they live, a new report has revealed.

According to the study, conducted by PayPal, 94 per cent of Britons living in the countryside make purchases over the web.

Furthermore, 42 per cent more take part in online retail than they did in 2008, as a result of greater choice and convenience, with 16 per cent claiming their nearest shops do not stock what they need.

And ten per cent state their closest store is still too far away.

Managing director of PayPal UK Carl Scheible noted that eCommerce will become "a lifeline for many communities", with "up to 33 village shops … closing a month".

In related news, a survey by eBay Advertising revealed that a Christmas boom is expected in the industry, with 85 per cent of those asked planning to either maintain or increase their spending levels at this time.
